The SEO Landscape in 2025

Search is no longer just about keywords. Google's shift toward intent-based ranking, the rise of AI Overviews, and the increasing importance of brand signals have fundamentally changed how organic visibility is won and maintained.

Here are the seven trends shaping rankings in 2025.

1. AI Overviews Are Stealing Clicks — Build for Brand Mentions Instead

Google's AI Overviews now appear for over 40% of informational queries. These pull synthesised answers from multiple sources, often reducing clicks to individual pages. The counterintuitive response? Optimise for being mentioned in AI Overviews by building genuine topical authority, not just targeting featured snippets.

What to do: Create comprehensive, expert-authored content on your core topics. Build your brand's presence across trusted third-party sources (forums, review sites, industry publications) so Google's models see you as a reliable authority.

2. Topical Authority Beats Keyword Matching

The old approach — targeting individual keywords with individual pages — is being replaced by topical clusters: a hub page covering a broad topic, supported by satellite pages covering every sub-topic in depth.

What to do: Map your content strategy around 3–5 core topical pillars. Every piece of content should connect back to a hub page and cover the topic more comprehensively than any competitor.

3. Core Web Vitals Are Now a Significant Ranking Factor

Google's page experience signals — particularly Interaction to Next Paint (INP), which replaced FID in 2024 — are now materially affecting rankings for competitive queries. Sites that score below "Good" thresholds are being outranked by competitors with equivalent content quality.

What to do: Run a Core Web Vitals audit on your top-traffic pages. Prioritise INP and LCP fixes — often lazy-loading, JavaScript reduction, and image optimisation make the biggest difference.

4. Brand Signals Are a Proxy for Quality

Google can't always algorithmically verify content quality at scale. Instead, it uses brand signals — search volume for your brand name, mentions across the web, social media presence, and reviews — as a quality proxy.

What to do: Invest in brand-building alongside technical SEO. PR, thought leadership, and community presence all feed brand signals that protect your organic rankings.

5. First-Hand Experience Content Outperforms Generic Content

Google's E-E-A-T update (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) explicitly rewards content that demonstrates first-hand experience. Generic AI-generated content that synthesises existing web content is being demoted.

What to do: Include original data, client stories, practitioner insights, and author bios with verifiable credentials. Interviews with industry experts also perform strongly.

6. Local SEO Is Hypercompetitive — and Hyperrewarding

For businesses with a local component, Google's local pack and Maps results have become increasingly prominent — and increasingly competitive. Reviews, GBP optimisation, and local citations are more important than ever.

What to do: Audit your Google Business Profile, respond to every review, and build local citation consistency across directories. Local content (neighbourhood guides, local event posts) also feeds local relevance signals.

7. Video and Image Search Are Growing Distribution Channels

As Google integrates more visual results into SERPs, YouTube SEO and Google Lens are emerging as meaningful organic traffic sources that most SEO strategies completely ignore.

What to do: Repurpose blog content as YouTube videos optimised for search. Add descriptive alt text and structured data to images. These are low-competition, high-upside organic channels in most niches.

The Through-Line

Every trend above points in the same direction: Google is rewarding genuine expertise, brand presence, and user experience — and punishing thin, generic, technically-weak content.

The brands that will win in 2025 are the ones building real topical authority, investing in performance, and treating SEO as a long-term compounding asset rather than a quick traffic hack.
